Hypertension Can Be Treated Naturally

By Bart Forcey

At least one-third of all adults in the US are diagnosed with high blood pressure, also known as hypertension. The symptoms of hypertension include seemingly minor problems such as headaches and dizziness. Because of this many of these people never realize that they have an illness until it is too late. Fortunately, natural treatment for high blood pressure can be used to ward off high blood pressure before it has a chance to develop. This can be important if you have a family medical history of hypertension.

Recent studies have shown that Coenzyme Q10 has the ability to reduce both systolic and diastolic pressure. CoQ10 is produced naturally in the body. It is a key factor in the production of energy in the mitochondria. A fat-soluble substance, CoQ10 should only be used in conjunction with other approved treatments and under the supervision of a physician.

Garlic has long been used to treat high blood pressure. A natural blood thinner, garlic may negatively interact with other medication. Therefore, it should only be used under the supervision of a health care professional. Recent research has also been conducted on hawthorn. Hawthorn is a natural herb that naturally dilates the arteries and thus improves circulation. The studies show that this natural treatment has a mild affect on both the systolic and diastolic pressure.

Fish oil contains DHA (docohexaenoic acid). This ingredient has been found to be a part of a healthy cardiovascular system. Not yet approved by the FDA, fish oil should be used with caution. Folic acid, otherwise known as Vitamin B9, has been found to control the homocysteine levels in those diagnosed with from hypertension. As a water-soluble substance, our bodies can not store folic acid. A constant supply of folic acid is needed to provide the correct amount for heart health.

Some other natural remedies that lessen the risk for cardiovascular disease are potassium, calcium and magnesium. Calcium and magnesium work in together to reduce the effects of hypertension. Studies of magnesium have shown it to be effective in reducing the diastolic pressure. Potassium reduces the body's sodium levels, which has proven to reduce systolic pressure. Incorporating these minerals as part of a healthy diet can work well as a natural treatment for high blood pressure.

Diet is a major factor in the reduction and prevention of high blood pressure. The National Institutes of Health have developed two diets that, if followed, will naturally prevent and reduce hypertension. These diets called DASH and DASH sodium are dietary approaches to stopping hypertension. Sodium intake is reduced by 1500 mg a day with DASH sodium.

Several natural remedies can also be used to reduce and prevent high blood pressure. These remedies include exercise, breathing techniques, biofeedback and non-traditional medicinal techniques from the Far East. All natural treatments for high blood pressure should be monitored by a physician. - 29887
